Egypt asserts attendance of Netanyahu to peace summit
According to statements from Egypt’s presidency, both Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas are expected to attend the gathering, which is set to begin later in the day.
The presidency’s spokesperson explained that their participation seeks “to consolidate the ceasefire agreement to stop the war in Gaza, and confirm their commitment to it.”
The confirmation followed reports that Netanyahu had a phone conversation with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, during which US President Donald Trump was also present.
Reports indicated that more than 20 world leaders are expected to take part in the Sharm el-Sheikh meeting, which will be jointly chaired by Sisi and Trump. Egypt noted that the primary goal of the summit is “to end the war in the Gaza Strip, enhance efforts to bring peace and stability to the Middle East, and usher in a new phase of regional security and stability.”
The initial stage of the Gaza ceasefire deal began on Friday, forming part of Trump’s broader initiative to conclude the two-year Israeli military campaign in the enclave.
Since October 2023, Israeli operations have reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 67,800 Palestinians in Gaza—most of them women and children—rendering much of the territory unlivable.
